Dressing for Success …..using closeted items from the past

By Joan Stokely for GWCC

Now that the season is changing and clothing closets are going through a metamorphosis, it is time to take a good look at what we are wearing. As we change our wardrobes from lighter weight fabrics to more substantial woven materials, it is just the right time to take a critical look at our attire to make sure it is worthy of another season. Even more so in these times, it is important to look well dressed and feel like you are looking good.

Here are some guidelines to follow before you wear your closeted items from last season:

• Check the length of pant or skirt to make sure it is appropriate and flattering

• Make sure the seams are in tact, including the pant seat

• If buttons are loose, remove and re-sew; it is easier than locating exact buttons later

• If you are missing buttons; make sure you replace them

• If a lining is torn, mend it before it progresses to a greater problem

• If you have lost a few pounds or gained a few have your clothing tailored

• If a sweater has pills, invest in a pill shaver

Having a great local tailor is a necessary relationship for a busy professional. The hems that need attention or the missing buttons that keep you from wearing an outfit can be remedied quickly by a savvy tailor.

Check out your accessories as well:

• Spotted ties can be dry cleaned and they are good as new

• Belts with well worn leather should be cared for or discarded if cracked

• Shoes and boots should be heeled and soled if necessary. A good polishing and weather treatment before the winter weather is advised.

• Scarves should be mended if loose edging appears and cleaned if necessary

• About your jewelry, if you wear pearls or other strung jewelry, make sure it is in good condition. Check your prongs as well on your rings. Your jeweler can restring your treasures and restore your prongs to keep your investments secure.

• Check out your briefcase and portfolio. If they look too worn, don’t assume it looks like you’re a seasoned professional. They just might look too worn. Time to re-indulge.

Enjoy the change of wardrobe and the change of season!
