Mergers & Acquisitions ….and human capitalWe hear so much about mergers, acquisitions, the blending of resources, lowering costs, blocking bonuses, cutting production, boutique bank mergers, lackluster business performance, newly combined offices, an overlap in service, reducing the need for office space and many other terms that all draw down to the depersonalization of the human worker. What has happened to the value of human capital? Where is the civility?
While businesses may find themselves in the merger, acquisition or reduction in force position the civilized treatment of all employees is key. This applies to employees who remain in the organization, to the employee whose position has been redefined and for the employees who will experience a reduction in force. An organization shows their strength in the positive handling of this very delicate situation. All of a sudden, relationships that have been built over years change. A formerly non-competitive environment may change as businesses merge positions. Some may even find themselves vying for the same position as their peers.
If you find yourself in a competitive situation, follow these tips to help you gain a favorable advantage:
1. Keep a positive attitude. Positive, competent employees are recognized as assets to the business. 2. Be completely prepared to interview for any position in the organization with little notice; think job knowledge and your personal appearance. 3. Be confident and enthusiastic. These are two powerful leadership qualities. 4. Be timely and courteous. This shows that you value yourself and others in the organization. 5. Never talk behind another employees back or speak unkindly about another. Lack of kindness shows a lack of good sense.
While the above tips apply to employees in the competitive job market, there are ways that employers can help displaced employees keep their dignity. Keeping open, honest lines of communications going is a good start. Employers who offer transition packages to their employees lessen the blow of loosing a job. Preparing a favorable reference without being asked is a nice way to affirm that you valued a former employee. Civility during these times in essential.
Keep thinking positive in these ever changing times and remember that human capital is the backbone of businesses. Remember to Be Extraordinary!
