Fore! …… a word of warning; know the etiquette and rules of golf before you play

By Joan R. Stokely

If you are a golfer, you already know the importance of golf etiquette on the course. If you are contemplating the sport of golfing, then it is very important for you to know that there are detailed rules about playing the game. The United States Golf Association has an informative website; www.usga.org. They want golfers to enjoy the game, and to play by the rules. The etiquette tab on the site lists many of the important social expectations when playing the game.

Because there are no referees walking with the players, honesty and integrity are key hallmarks of the golfer. Courtesy on the course is expected between golfers and on occasion when maintenance personnel must complete their work during the game, it is very important to show courtesy by yielding to their position and equipment.

Here are five very basic tips about golf etiquette:

1) Before you even get to the golf course, check out their dress code. Be sure to ask about their rules for golf shoes as well. Typically a golf shirt, Bermuda length shorts, socks, shoes and a hat are safe bets. Slacks for cooler weather, or by request at some courses, and golf skirts are also appropriate attire.

2) Be aware of where you position yourself. If someone is playing, keep at a safe distance; do not let you or your shadow be in their way. Practice invisibility during play.

3) Be careful not to cause any distracting behavior. When a ball is in play, or when a player is concentrating - silence is key. Make sure any electronic devices that you carry are muted during the game. Do not consider another players set up time as an opportunity for you to search through your golf bag; it might be just enough noise to cause distraction.

4) Fore! is the official word of warning. It is the appropriate word to shout if you think your ball is going to endanger another person on the course. It is the only time shouting is really appropriate.

5) Be ready to play when you are on the course. Walk briskly and plan your strategy as much as possible during your walking time. It is a perfect time to take notice of terrain and wind conditions. Efficiency is appreciated by all!

For non-golfers, the next time you see a golfing event – be courageous. Sign Up! Then go to get some lessons to build your confidence before the event!
