What Would Santa Do?...about regifting - GWCC

Earlier this month I had a once in a lifetime opportunity, an interview with Santa Claus (SC). Although the interview was brief, because of the time of year, when I addressed the subject of regifting, SC offered his candid opinion on the subject.

SC explained that when he began his gift giving in the 4th century, he focused his benevolence on poor children. The children were very grateful and since they had so little the notion of regifting was not even considered. As economies became stronger and disposable income grew, people started giving each other gifts and did not rely solely on Good Ole’ St. Nick.

Here is my abridged interview with the master gift giver – Santa Claus

JS: So Santa, when did you first hear about regifting?

SC: Regifting, it was one of my elves who sent me a video clip from a Seinfeld episode. Did you know that the first mention of the word regift was aired…on television in 1995, with no consultation with the North Pole or any communication with me. It was George in the Seinfeld episode! It was all about a label maker. Oh, if they only consulted me, I could have helped them.

JS: Santa, how do you know what is a good gift?

SC: Well, I know it is no secret – my management style includes having a list, checking it twice, etc. I know what people want because I ask them to develop lists. Really, children are the best at this. It is really rare that a child regifts. About that label maker, that is a specific need gift, I would have chosen something different. It is best to buy something that you know someone wants or needs. I have based my business model on this foundation.

JS: Santa, can you offer some regifting pointers?

SC: Here is a bit of advice to the regifters:

1. Remove all wrapping paper and the to/from tags.

2. Consider who would best enjoy and use the gift and give it happily.

3. Tell the new giftee that this was a gift given to you that you know they will enjoy.

4. A gift is not a regift if it has been used; that is a hand-me-down.

5. If the regift is a food item, only give it if it is fresh. No stale chocolates!

6. Fruitcakes, invite a friend or neighbor to enjoy a fruitcake feast with you over coffee, tea or coco. If there is any left, leave it for me on Christmas Eve; I love fruitcake!

Merry Christmas!
