Blame the Pink Squirrel….now he realizes the Pink Squirrel did him in. - GWCC

By Joan R. Stokely

Ivy League School

He had the greatest credentials. He was graduating with his MBA from an Ivy League school. He was ranked at the top of his class. Everything was going right for him. He carefully researched investment banking companies because that is where he saw his future. Then it happened, his selected top-ranked investment banking company was coming to his university to recruit the “cream-of-the-crop” students from his class. This company only wanted the best and they had this gentleman on their list.

The Initial Contact

The MBA student primed himself for the initial contact. He wanted to be selected in the top group of candidates. It was the best opportunity; and exactly what he planned for his career. He could see it happen. He dressed meticulously and had all the right business gear. Head to toe….perfect. There he was, face to face with his future in front of him. He made a great appearance and spoke the words that the prospective employer wanted to hear. Great job; the investment banking company invited him back for an interview.

The Setting

It is a tradition that when this particular Investment Banking Company (IBC) comes to campus they like to conduct their interviews in the university’s prestigious formal dining room. The want a particular atmosphere to imitate the type of setting the potential employee might encounter with one of their wealthy clients. The IBC managers were ready for the evening. Several interviews were scheduled.

The Interview

The MBA student (MBA) was prompt. His appearance – impeccable. The interested employer greeted MBA with a firm handshake and welcomed him with great enthusiasm.

They sat down and began the dinner interview. The IBC host requested MBA to order a drink before the meal. With little hesitation the MBA looked directly at the waiter and said “a Pink Squirrel please.”

Blame the Pink Squirrel

That’s right. MBA realized his error shortly after his drink request. The IBC managers ordered more traditional drinks. It wasn’t the fact that he chose alcohol; IBC wanted him to have a drink. It was part of their employment strategy. The drink was a poor choice and it truly did him in. Instead of showing strength and good judgment, it showed a weakness. He didn’t make the grade with this employer, but he learned a very valuable lesson. Social skills matter.
